LEVI’S 501XX - REBUILD VINTAGE

Good evening. This is Shin Matsushima from cantáte.

On June 1, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the company’s founding and the third anniversary of starting cliché.

Celebrations are somehow embarrassing,

It’s not exactly my forte, but I had been thinking about whether I could do something for the customers who support us every day, as a gesture of gratitude.

Amid all this, I remembered one foolish project.

The idea was to take the LEVI’S 501XX deadstock I had been collecting since I was 20, recut it using the cantáte pattern, and tailor it to my own size.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But for me, it was the starting point—and a dream I had been nurturing for years.

 

 

But countless hurdles stood in the way of making it a reality.

 

• Large-size deadstock is extremely scarce.。

　In 15 years, we were able to collect only four pairs.

　They had to be large sizes to be cut using the cantate pattern.

• They had to be deadstock, not used.

　If the jeans have been washed even once, the shrinkage rate changes and the puckering won’t appear. That would defeat the purpose.

 

• The issue of reusing tack buttons and rivets.

　Once a part has been driven in, it normally can’t be reused. But we racked our brains and found a way.

 

And after overcoming countless other challenges—

We decided to see it through with nothing but gratitude and momentum.

 

I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to collect pieces in sizes or condition surpassing these four again.

Besides, doing the same thing with redline or 66 denim would be meaningless. We deliberately focused only on the pinnacle: “XX.”

 

And we completely dismantle every single pair.

We make use of whatever can still be used, and reconstruct the parts that have deteriorated or that we want to update.

The placement of the V-stitching, the number of buttons on the button fly— it’s fine if no one notices.

But for those who notice, they should be the kind of pair that gives you goosebumps.

“They look ordinary, but they’re not.”

That is everything these pants are about.
