“Clothing Born from Grandma’s Bedding”

“The finest vest, born from Grandma’s bedding.”

Good evening. This is Matsushima from cantáte.

When I first came up with these words, I found myself smiling a little.

I still remember the faces of those who came on the first day of the exhibition—even that moment.

I laughed as if it were a lie with the buyer and explained it.

But the moment you pick it up, you understand its meaning.

More than nostalgia or gentleness, it is a vest filled with “the warmth of human life.”

mouton intended for bedding

The material used for this vest isa special mouton developed as medical bedding.

It was originally a material designed to prevent bedsores,

It was made to support and accompany the body over a long period of time.

An exceptionally substantial suede with pile of unparalleled quality

The suede is substantial, and the wool is full and abundant.

and the pile density is remarkably high, creating a moist, almost clinging texture the moment you touch it.

The suede side has a deep, rich color,

Its color depth changes each time it catches the light.

“A material that supported daily life before it became clothing.”

Precisely because of this, this mouton carries a memory of human warmth unlike any other garment.

The quietness of the construction

Raw-edged armholes and neckline

The vegetable-tanned leather brand name is proof of a limited-edition item.

The design is extremely simple.

There is no collar, and the armholes are designed to be exceptionally wide.

It does not impede movement, even when worn over a coat or jacket.

The neckline, armholes, and hem are left raw.

an exceptionally large patch pocket

All the more for having stripped away ornamentation,

Each stitch and the pattern quietly asserts its presence.

What lives unseen is “honesty without excess.”

The space of the zipper

A subtly clouded sheen.

It evokes the presence of a vintage piece.

the U-shaped stopper also lends this garment its distinctive atmosphere.

Within that quietness,The vintage TALON zipper is the sole element that gives off a distinct glow.

When picked up between your fingertips, it feels slightly heavy and makes a sharp sound.

The softened feel characteristic of old metal.

The timeless sheen of metal, with a slight dullness.

It holds the atmosphere of seasons gone by.

Within that slight “play,” you can feel the presence of the human hand.

an imperfect fit.

Yet that slight discrepancy resonates with the softness of the mouton,

Breathing old air into new clothes.

as though this vest were telling you, “It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

The seemingly impersonal metal components,

may in fact be its most human element.

Though it is a new garment, it feels somehow nostalgic.

old metal and medical-grade mouton.

Materials from different eras and with different purposes come together,

it has been reconstituted as a single garment.

Rather than simply combining materials,

creates the sensation of stitching time together.

The bedding that once enveloped and supported people

is once again beginning to breathe as something to be worn.

A garment that stays close to everyday life

When you hear “mouton vest,” you may imagine a decorative winter item.

Yet this vest blends seamlessly into any setting.

With denim, slacks, or a coat.

the reason is that the design carries an unforced ease.

If anything, and not so hot that you break into a sweat when wearing it now.

Warm, yet light,

Refined, yet relaxed.

That balance naturally blends with everyday movements and breathing.

For anyone who works at a desk, the back should feel gently warmed.

As ifThe reassuring feeling of having a cushion behind your back.

A sensation less like wearing a garment and more like it becoming “a part of you.”

Yet the vest’s true appeal emerges when it is layered.

Over a jacket, coat, blouson—whatever the piece—it settles in as though it had always been there.

I believe that is the greatest pleasure of this garment.

Because it has ample width and deep armholes,

Even layered over a voluminous MA-1, it looks beautifully composed.

I find myself wondering as I listen to the metallic sound of TALON.

Where, exactly, does “completion” lie for a garment?

not through precision, price, or trends.

Surely, within the life of the person who wears it,

Something that reaches completion while gradually changing shape.

and this mouton vest is surely the same.

It softens with time, grows familiar in the hands,

Before long, it becomes like “bedding of one’s own.”

“The finest vest, born from Grandma’s bedding.”

A slightly humorous, somehow poetic phrase.

Yet beneath it lies a definite sense of reality.

What is born from people’s lives returns to people’s lives once again.

This garment breathes within that cycle.
