Honest things stand the test of time.
Good evening. I’m Matsushima from cantáte.
Clothes are at their most beautiful when they are new.
There was a time when I thought that too.
Sleeves without a single wrinkle, the surface of denim that has not yet begun to breathe.
You stand a little taller in front of the mirror, yet feel unsettled somehow.
It is because the distance between you and the clothes is still awkward.
But as time passed, I began to realize it.
New clothes are not the finished form.
If anything, it begins from there.
Today, I’m talking about those “clothes that have already begun.”
Mixing in some personal possessions that are not for sale.
Today, I’m not thinking about whether to sell them or not. I’ll simply write what I like.
and that kind of distance makes talking about clothes feel more honest.
As these are personal possessions, they are not things I can introduce at the shop,
I cannot answer questions.
I’m sorry. Please accept this as a small gesture.
Let’s start with the three whose changes are easiest to see.

RED WING 2268 PT91
I do not ride motorcycles. I do not even ride a bicycle.
So although this is not their intended use, the brown core still comes through clearly.
Heavy, stubborn, and occasionally tiresome.
Yet before I know it, I want to wear them again.
2268 is my third pair in my lifetime.
Even after tiring of them, I come back.
I think that is the honesty of a Red Wing shoe.

Fluffy Series
No matter how many times I put it on, the loft does not collapse, and the shape holds.
It is not simply soft and fluffy.
The shoulders become rounder, and the elbows come slightly forward.
and even when extensive wear distorts the silhouette, washing restores it to its original form.
It feels as though the warmth of the winters spent wearing it sinks directly into the fabric,
With every wash, it gradually begins to follow my body.
“A sweatshirt is the same everywhere, right?”
I think the people who feel that way will be the ones who get hooked.
In fact, before I encountered this sweatshirt, I had never chosen one even once.
Because it felt somewhat “sloppy,” and I could never grow to like it.

Denim Flare Trousers
The 12.5 oz starched denim is stubborn at first.
But after a week, it begins to follow the body.
The Union Special flat-felled seams, the chain stitch at the hem, the way the lockstitch sinks into the fabric.
Everything becomes more apparent with time.
Not wrinkles, but more room.
Every morning, I think: this is what it means for something to grow with you.
It fades with every touch, but its character grows deeper.
This is the realm where the distance between me and my clothes is closest.
Once you have starched something, you find yourself wanting to starch it again.
Because that distinctive dry texture gets to me.
From here on, things whose unseen parts slowly change.

Rios of Mercedes
Even now, I sometimes wonder how it develops such a shine.
A sheen that seems less like the oils are leaving and more like pressure is compacting the material, increasing its density.
The toe knows the way I walk, and the opening refuses to give up on the shape of my foot.
A craftsman’s lasting and shaping work gains credibility with age.

Ribbon Belt
it makes no demands despite being used every day.
More than simply serving to hold up your trousers,
A tool that, before you know it, begins to support the “movements of daily life.”
The slight catch when tightened, and the barely perceptible flex that follows as you walk.
Those small details gradually settle in, as if learning your personal habits.
You may seem not to care about it, but in fact you trust it most of all.
You notice its quiet work only when you take it off.
I think Ribbon Belt is the kind of item that keeps that sort of distance.

WW2 T-Back Jacket
so the center-back seam is not decorative.
on the large sizes of the time, the body panels could not fit within the width of the fabric,
It simply had to be split down the middle—
is a detail born from such “constraints.”
Yet that logic, which almost seems accidental,
It is structured to support the lines of our bodies today.
The shoulders do not completely collapse, and the shape holds even when worn open at the front.
The practicality born of history continues to suit life today.
I always press the sleeves crisp.
The crease line running through it is a quiet favorite of mine.
When worn for a long time, the garments that support us begin to develop something like a personality.
T-Back must be one of them.
Finally, things whose depth of time itself becomes their appeal.

Mouton Vest
and the flow of the nap slowly begins to follow gravity.
The fibers that initially stood upright gradually settle as time spent wearing it accumulates,
The roundness of the shoulders softens and changes with each passing year.
Somehow, the pace of that change feels just right.
The nap shifts with movement, and the depth of its color changes with the direction of the light.
It shows a different character every time I put it on.
A change quieter than “growing,” like a deepening relationship.

Silk Linen Forestiere Jacket
Of everything introduced today, this is the one that feels closest from the very beginning.
The straightforwardness when you put on the sleeves.
But it doesn’t end there.
The goal is not simply to become familiar,
A jacket that quietly deepens the more you wear it.
The sheepskin on the underside of the collar and at the elbows
The place that honestly reflects aging more than any other part of this garment.
Each time you touch it, a calm sheen increases.
“Some things become beautiful by being worn away.”
I felt the same when I first saw a black-painted Leica.
Not diminishing, but deepening.
That is surely where the essence of aging lies.

Le Corbusier Vest
The room in the front panels softens in proportion to the number of days.
It begins rational, but by the time the seasons turn, its appearance becomes almost emotional.
It is the finest calfskin, but every leather’s color floats at first.
but within a week it settles down and becomes soft and supple.
I’m too lazy, so I sometimes drench it in the shower,
I end up quickly breaking it in with a wet towel.
It is a material that tough and sincere.

Hermès coin purse and an 18K money clip made long ago
Leather embossed with HAAS Barénia.
A sheen developed by the oils of your hands.
A tool that, before you know it, supports your own standards.

10eyevan
No matter how carefully finished the metal is,
If it remains in contact with sweat and sebum, its appearance will inevitably change.
of the end tip Silver 925。
The initial bright silver reacts with sulfur and humidity in the air,
It gradually sinks into deeper tones.
18K the balancer.
but a subtle redness increases, and the way it catches the light becomes softer.
The shine returns only for the moment you polish it,
It soon draws closer to the colors of everyday life again.
The plating applied to the frame does the same.
Fine oxidation progresses from the places you touch,
The position of the finger you use becomes the mark itself.
Glasses lie at the boundary between the face and time.
As you wear them every day,
it develops “your own metal color,” one that cannot be achieved when new.
Belonging to no one,
A change that remembers only your own contours.

Gantier Causse Unlined gloves
Sheepskin and peccary.
Things I took for granted quietly drift away before I realize it.
I suddenly think that I’ve reached the age of facing changes like that.
“If you want it and it’s still within reach, you’re better off buying it.”
If the reason you’re hesitating is the price, buy it.
If the reason to buy is the price, don’t.
A sincere tool quietly straightens out the standards by which you make decisions.

ROLEX GMT-Master 1675/3
This is less a “watch to enjoy aging,”
My 1675/3 is a watch brought back to life by someone who can take it to a level of precision new watches still don’t know.
After all, this watch is already a 55-year-old nice middle-aged gentleman.
Mr. Kanasaka of vintagerollies.
My time and the time this watch has lived through,
he carefully and quietly weaves it anew.
Tools have their limits, but
There is no limit to human work.
A watch that makes you feel that way.
If you’re hesitating over a five-digit ROLEX,
Try consulting Mr. Kanasaka once.
It becomes a “watch you can wash and use.”

When you put on new clothes, you feel a little tense.
But clothes you have continued to wear let you entrust yourself to them without worry.
Because it understands everything about your body heat, habits, and life.
Not “getting old,” but “becoming your own.”
That is the true nature of aging.
The days you use it become part of the garment’s story.
And the more discerning you become, the more troublesome it gets.
Because you start noticing changes without any apparent reason.
But that’s all right.
I want to tell the Matsushima boy from back then that, too.
Rather than leaving it on display in its pristine state,
It’s much better to go ahead and get it dirty; it will develop a far better character.
The more you wear clothes, the more you understand them.
I think I like that feeling of gradually coming to understand.
If you’ve read this far,
You’re someone who can grow into a good-looking face, too.
Is the grass greener on the other side?
Then we might as well make this one blue too.
